Kurt Buddy. When you taste desperate, your perception of "following the rules" will change. That's just one Piratologist's opinion...

What will it take to push you to the brink? And how will you react when it happens? Will you still follow the rules as decided by people who run the broken system? I have a paraphrased quotation from one of your favourite movies for you:

"You've never tasted desperate. You're the Prince of Dunbar and you have a house on an Island. Don't come here with your anger. You don't understand this world. You don't understand pirates. And, Mr. Heinrich, you always fear what you don't understand."

Good question. I don't think there aren't too many left - when looking at Somalia, we're talking failed state pretty much, aren't we? Total anarchy, otherwise if they had a functioning governing body, they'd not suffer to have those pirates in the first place - I guess. But then I've never been to Somalia...

Before we put pirates on too high of a pedestal, what about the law abiding Somali workers, sailors, and business people? Are they left to their own devices by these "freelance" pirates? Or are they robbed (another word for "recycling" of wealth) when they show the slightest of profits?

Hey John,

good thing about piracy as a metaphor! I was going to say exactly that, take it as a metaphor, don't go out there guns-blazing, Mad Max-style, no matter how loud your inner sense of injustice shouts out.
I also thought of Somalia and so on at once. Our German Navy is out there, part of the UN-mission trying to keep those pirates at bay. Who are poor devils with no choice. I once saw a documentary on the conditions that made those people turn "freelance"... No wonder they're so fierce they even attack fully equipped, 21st century German warships. Talk about asymmetric warfare as a result of poverty and oppression via shutting people of from equal access to markets and technology. The result usually gets very, very nasty (also cf. Palestine and the Israelis inability to deal with Hamas, Hisbollah and what not).
I just hope that metaphorical pirates will have more impact in our 21st century, than real ones. Did any of you know that there is a new political party in Germany, The Pirates? The idea comes from Sweden, they are quite a cyberpunk-conglomeration (fighting against new, restrictiv anti-terrorism-internet laws) but they are also very green and liberal. The movement is currently spreading all over Europe. Hm, maybe I ought to research that and put a piece about it on one of the coming Fridays. What does the pirate-crowd here think?

This is great. The third section on the environment shouldve gone second though. Don't you think?

I hope Copenhagen has more pirates in it now. What does the picture say?
