I really do hate Toronto... has nothing to do with the city itself, or the people even, it's more to do with the chaotic and terrible weather in Ontario, so I suppose it's not as much the city as the province entirely... too many extremes for my liking.

I have always lived in Vancouver. Struggling to pay half a million dollars for a crummy house in a suburban neighbourhood miles from anything remotely cool, I'm all for Toronto - I can get paid more for what I do - there's a bigger industry there to work within and my home is only costing me $350k instead of the nearly $600k here. We may be more beautiful but that's about it... everything else is better. As a matter of fact, I think I'll sell my house and move this spring...

I'm glad you had the gumption to post this but wish I'd done it first. First, in reply to Julian Chriatians, the anti-Toronto thing is not a media invention. It's alive and well in Vancouver. I'm Vancouver born and bred but have had a couple of stints in Ontario. For all Vancouver has going for it, Toronto is a way more vibrant scene.

As Mr. Horn has pointed out here, TO still has plenty of the grit that Vancouver has long since traded in for Yaletown sheen. I challenge any Vancouverite to take a walk from Bloor and Bathurst and meander their way down through Little Italy, Kensington Market, Chinatown, Queen West, back up through downtown, along Yonge then over to Cabbagetown and Riverdale. Then tell me how you would replicate that experience in Vancouver.

Mountains make lovely wallpaper, but they don't substitute for civic life.

The Toronto Sucks song is actually done by Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. It's a common misconception that The arrogant worms wrote the song because in downloaded mp3's of the song it's incorrectly labled as the worms. Just to put that out there.

Do people in Vancouver (or anywhere for that matter) really hate Toronto? I'm starting to think that this "why does everyone hate Toronto?" thing is a complete fabrication used by the media and blogs (yes this one, too) when they don't have anything real to write about.

I'm from Ottawa, so may have been spared some of this alleged Torontism (we understand that when people hate "Ottawa", they mean the government, not the place, and we often hate "Ottawa" too). However, I have witnessed very limited Toronto-bashing here, certainly not anything more vicious than the "oh, Vancouver is such a cultural backwater" type comment I've heard from Torontonians living in Vancouver.

OK, maybe once in a while someone says something nasty, but every community has its share of wankers, and many people are wankers once in a while. This isn't widespread persecution/ discrimination. It's a media plot.

Thanks for posting this, John! I went to school in Vancouver (born and grew up in TO) and as much as I liked living there I was appalled by how acceptable it is to criticize Toronto to the point of rudeness.

Toronto is not perfect but it's a great place to live.

This is the best post ever on this blog ever! Everything you said about tdot is true, and its unfortunate that the leafs sucks almost as much as hipsters. Where did you go? The Drake? I hope you other people re*ding on the Left Coast take this article to heart.because it is very important for the future of canada for people to embrace Toronto as a good place to be.

Great job, John. Getting hugged at a hotdog stand is a little weird, though. And doesn't happen too often.
